Merrow’s lament is ode to the archetype of the wild feminine spirit. A tale of love, loss, and the call to return to ones truest self. Merrow’s are merfolk of Irish lore. Female merrows are said to have shimmering blue or green scaled tails and beautiful green hair. They use their magic red cap or cloak called a cohuleen druith that allows them to walk on land. If it is stolen or hidden, the merrow becomes trapped on the shore until its recovered. Unlike their female counter parts, male merrows are said to be less charming and more dangerous with grotesque piglike faces and will often lure sailors into the depths, cause shipwrecks, and serve as guards for treasure lost to the sea and rarely go ashore.

Many tales tell of fishermen who fall in love with enchanting female merrows who adventure onto the shore and hide their cohuleen druith so they are unable to return to the sea. Although merrows may find love ashore if they find their cap or cloak, they will always answer the call of the sea and return to her home beneath the waves. Their songs are described as haunting and beautiful and are said to be heard before storms to warn sailors away from perilous waters.

Merrow’s lament is ode to the spirit of these merfolk. The wild feminine archetype and the tale of love, loss, and the call to return to ones truest self.
